Carolina Consortium and IGI Global Partner to Provide Open Access Agreement Options to Support Researchers

By IGI Global on Feb 27, 2023
Carolina Consortium Logo IGI Global, a leading medium-sized independent international academic publisher of scholarly reference sources, has continued its collaboration with the Carolina Consortium, a large group of diverse libraries, to provide a new opt-in for Carolina Consortium member institutions to set up Open Access Agreements with IGI Global to support their faculty in publishing under OA in IGI Global’s full portfolio of 175+ highly cited (Web of Science SCIE, SSCI, and more) OA journals.

What Are Open Access Agreements?

Article Processing Charges (APCs) can deplete an institution’s already scarce resources, leading faculty members to look towards outside funding or take on the cost of an APC themselves. To simplify this process, an institution can invest an amount upfront into an OA Agreement Fund to provide their researchers with funding for APCs.

After undergoing our rigorous double-blind peer review process, their faculty's accepted research published under OA will gain increased discoverability and higher citation impact while contributing to crucial bodies of emerging knowledge and adding to their institutional repository of high-quality publications.

With the upfront investment of an Open Access Agreement, it can provide researchers at their institution with funding to cover Article Processing Charges (APC) in IGI Global's 175+ open access journals.

IGI Global’s Agreement With Carolina Consortium

This agreement offers participating institutions flexible investment level options to simplify the management and funding of APC payments, which includes a discount on the APCs for their corresponding faculty authors based on the investment level of the institution.

APC fees are based on the pre-paid investment. Institutions may choose how much they invest, beginning with $5,000 annually. The fund covers the publishing costs for the open access content in the indicated journal. Institutions are able to top up additional funds at any time. IGI Global will notify the institution whenever the amount of funds available is too low to cover the cost of additional articles.

Corresponding authors whose articles are accepted after the peer review process by IGI Global qualify to have their articles published under this agreement and would be eligible to have the funds from the agreement utilized to open the article under the CC BY 4.0 License.

About the Carolina Consortium

The Carolina Consortium was established in 2004 for the express purpose of doing "big deals" with three large publishers who, at that time, required a certain volume (number of subscribing schools, total aggregate spend, etc.) before they would allow anyone into a big deal. In that first year, the consortium had 37 colleges/universities and one community college participate in one or more of the three deals offered. Over the next decade, the consortium grew rapidly, adding many more members and offers, and greatly expanding both the types of products offered and the kinds of libraries eligible to join. Today, the Carolina Consortium is a large group of diverse libraries, spanning two states and working together to save hundreds of millions of dollars on a wide variety of library resources and services.
