Why Teachers and Language Learners Need to Stay Updated on New Technologies: Hear From Expert Dr. Bin Zou
By
Iris Zhi
on
Dec 11, 2019
See Translated Mandarin Version
Due to the fast pace of technological changes, innovative teaching approaches and strategies should be developed to successfully integrate new technologies into language teaching. The world’s increasing globalization makes developing new technologies and techniques to bridge communication divides an essential component of modern education. In an effort to continuously provide the latest research in this dynamic field, Dr. Bin Zou, Editor-in-Chief of IGI Global’s
International Journal of Computer-Assisted Language Learning and Teaching
(IJCALLT), from the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China, shares how his journal contributes to the field in this IGI Global interview.
What motivates you to conduct research activities in your field of expertise?
When I was a Ph.D. student at the University of Bristol, I showed a special interest in the application of educational technology to foreign language teaching. When I graduated with my Ph.D. in 2008, I realized that there were not many academic journals in the field of technologies in foreign language teaching. With the rapid growth of modern education technology, there were research reports and articles that needed to be published. However, with limited journals at that time, the needs of teachers and researchers from all over the world could not be met. Therefore, I established the IJCALLT with the help of IGI Global. At the same time, I can always be at the forefront of modern technology to promote foreign language teaching research by constantly reading the articles submitted to IJCALLT.
What do you think is the most surprising discovery when conducting research?
Due to the rapid development of modern technology, many of the latest technologies are applied to foreign language teaching in various fields, which greatly widen my horizons, and I hope to apply some of these new technologies to my research and teaching.
As an expert in your field of study, what do you think you have learned so far?
I am constantly updating my research and practices based on the development of modern technology to keep pace with the times.
What are your main expectations for the outcomes of the publication? How are they implemented?
The publication provides opportunities for teachers and researchers, who are devoted to the application of modern technology to foreign language teaching, to publish research and practice. By expanding the influence of IJCALLT, such as publishing special issues at some internationally important conferences, it has been indexed by more authorities, such as Web of Science™ Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and Scopus®.
What are the main challenges of conducting research?
The main challenge is keeping up with the development of new technologies. The challenge of self-learning is very huge. If I become lazy, I will lag behind the development of new technologies.
What are the benefits of your research for the community?
This research lets more teachers and researchers understand the development of new technologies and hands-on research experiences, so that it can benefit more foreign language teachers and foreign language learners.
Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?
The application of modern technology to foreign language teaching has become an important branch of linguistics and educational research and has contributed positively to a wide range of research on linguistics and education.
How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these technology innovations?
My main research area is on how to apply new technology to foreign language teaching. I am devoted to establishing a bridge between technical staff and foreign language teachers to make new technologies more integrated with foreign language teaching and make it easier for foreign language teachers to use modern technology to promote teaching. Especially in the past two years, I have had a strong interest in the application of artificial intelligence technology to foreign language teaching. I hope to use artificial intelligence technology to promote foreign language teaching in the future.
What has your experience been like publishing with IGI Global?
IGI Global has supported me a lot. They insisted I create IJCALLT and promoted the continuous growth of the journal. At the same time, the journal's impact was getting bigger and bigger, and it has been indexed by Scopus, ESCI, and others. I hope that it will be indexed by SSCI in the near future and becomes one of the most important academic journals for applying modern technology to foreign language teaching.
IGI Global would like to thank Dr. Zou for sharing his insight on his journal and into new technological advancements in language learning and teaching. Additionally, Dr. Zou’s journal, IJCALLT, is continuously seeking new, innovative content for publication. For individuals interested in submitting a paper to IJCALLT, you can submit your article

International Journal of Computer-Assisted Language Learning and Teaching
