Description & Coverage
Description:

As interactive application software such as apps, installations, and multimedia presentations have become pervasive in everyday life, more and more computer scientists, engineers, and technology experts acknowledge the influence that exists beyond visual explanations.

Computational Solutions for Knowledge, Art, and Entertainment: Information Exchange Beyond Text focuses on the methods of depicting knowledge-based concepts in order to assert power beyond a visual explanation of scientific and computational notions. This book combines formal descriptions with graphical presentations and encourages readers to interact by creating visual solutions for science-related concepts and presenting data. This reference is essential for researchers, computer scientists, and academics focusing on the integration of science, technology, computing, art, and mathematics for visual problem solving.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborative Computing
  • Communication through Art
  • Interactive Learning
  • Virtual Systems in Social Networking
  • Visual Translation
  • Visualization Techniques
Reviews & Statements

Ursyn (art and design, University of Northern Colorado) explores ways to explain and present scientific and computational problems in a visual medium, and how such representations can in turn support computational solutions for problems related to cognition, art, and entertainment. Her topics include art as an instrument for acquiring knowledge, aesthetics in the context of new media art and knowledge visualization, art and design criticism in art production and instruction, taking inspiration from astronomy for visual and verbal projects, energy and environment, acceleration, mathematics related visual events, poem illustration for the Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, the history of love, ways to entertain with the use of computing technologies, challenges in game design, and metaphorical portraits.

Ursyn had over 40 single juried and invitational art shows, over 200 fine art exhibitions, such as over dozen times at SIGGRAPH Art Galleries, travelling shows Louvre, Paris, NTT Museum in Tokyo (5000 texts and 2000 images representing XX Century), and Virtual Media Network, the largest moving image outdoor display) Dallas Texas. Her work was selected to be sent by NASA to the Moon Museum MoonArk project. Research and pedagogy interests include integrated instruction in art, science, and computer art graphics. She published articles and artwork in books and journals. Since 1987 she serves as a Liaison, Organizing and Program Committee member of International IEEE Conferences on Information Visualization (iV) London, UK, and (CGIV), and as a Chair of the Symposium and Digital Art Gallery D-ART For iV. She serves as a chair of the SpaceTime International Student Competition for the ACM SIGGRAPH Conference. Anna has published six books with IGI-Global and book chapters.
